How do I rename a variable or change its initial value?

In Course settings › Variables, choose Edit on the variable, change the name or Initial value, then choose Save variable.

Imported courses often have variable names that made sense to someone else. You can rename any variable you or the original author created, and change the value it starts with.

Rename a variable

  1. #

Choose Course settings in the header, then Variables.

  2. #

Under Your variables, choose Edit next to the variable.

  3. #

    Change the Variable name.

  4. #

    Choose Save variable.

  5. #

If the variable is already used in the course, Xogogy tells you how many places use it and asks you to confirm. Choose Rename referenced variable to go ahead, or Cancel.

Interactions, conditions and text that use the variable are linked to the variable itself, not to its name, so they keep working after a rename.

Change the initial value

  1. #

Choose Edit next to the variable.

  2. #

Change the Initial value. For a true/false variable, choose true or false.

  3. #

    Choose Save variable.

Tip: Choose Show IDs above the list to see each variable's permanent id. The id never changes when you rename, which helps when you work with custom interactions.

A variable that a custom interaction is allowed to read or change asks you to confirm with Rename exposed variable, because the interaction may look it up by name. See How do I control what outside interactions may do?. Quiz and system values are provided by the course and cannot be renamed.
