How do I add slides and sections?

Choose New slide on the Home or Insert tab (or press Ctrl+M), pick a layout and a title, then use Add section to group slides.

Slides hold your content, and sections group slides into lessons or modules. A new slide goes straight after the slide you have selected, in the same section.

Add a slide

  1. #

In the Slides panel, select the slide that the new slide should follow.

  2. #

On the Home or Insert tab, choose New slide, or press Ctrl+M. The arrow beside New slide lists the Title and text and Blank layouts and Duplicate slide. The + button at the top of the Slides panel does the same.

  3. #

In the Add slide dialog, type a Slide title.

  4. #

Under Slide layout, choose an arrangement:

    • Title for a title and subtitle.
    • Title and text for a title and body text.
    • Two columns for a title and two columns.
    • Picture and caption for a picture frame and a caption.
    • Blank for an empty slide.
  5. #

Choose Add slide. The new slide is selected and ready to edit.

Add a section

  1. #

Select a slide in the section that the new section should follow.

  2. #

On the Home or Insert tab, choose Add section.

  3. #

Type a Section name and choose Add section. The empty section appears after the current one.

  4. #

Move slides into it by dragging them onto the section heading, or with Move to section on the Slides tab. See How do I reorder and delete slides?.

Change the layout of an existing slide

  1. #

Select the slide and choose Slide layout on the Home tab.

  2. #

Pick a new Arrangement and choose Apply. Existing content stays on the slide; named placeholders are arranged and any missing ones are added empty.

  3. #

Check the slide for overlaps afterwards. To put the layout back as it started, choose Reset to layout.

Tip: Every slide or section you add is one step in your history, so Undo or Ctrl+Z removes it again. Cancel or Escape in any of these dialogs changes nothing.
